ศาสตร์แห่งชุดทหาร

 เราเจนตากับภาพทหารในชุดพรางตัว หรือที่บางครั้งเรียกว่าชุดสนาม บางคนอาจจะนึกว่าลวดลายต่างๆ เป็นเรื่องของความสวยงามและศิลปะ ความจริงแล้วมีจุดประสงค์ที่ลึกซึ้งกว่านั้น และเป็นวิทยาศาสตร์มากด้วย
ลายพรางที่ปรากฏบนชุดทหารมิได้มีไว้เพื่อสนองจินตนาการของผู้ออกแบบตามสมัยนิยม หรือตามใจดีไซเนอร์ การออกแบบที่ว่านี้อาศัยกระบวนการทางวิทยาศาสตร์ที่เริ่มต้นด้วยการวิเคราะห์วิจัยจนนำไปสู่การผลิต ชุดพรางมีไว้เพื่อความปลอดภัยของนักรบจึงต้องกลมกลืนไปกับสภาพแวดล้อมรอบตัว ประสิทธิภาพในการทำสงครามหรือการป้องกันตนเองจะได้มีมากขึ้น

การพรางตนเองให้กลมกลืนกับธรรมชาตินั้นเพื่อจุดประสงค์ต่างๆ เป็นยุทธวิธีที่สำคัญของทั้งคนและสัตว์ ความจริงมนุษย์เรียนรู้เรื่องจากสัตว์เลื้อยคลาน ซึ่งประสบความสำเร็จมาก่อนมนุษย์ในการพรางตนเองเข้ากับสิ่งแวดล้อมอย่างกลมกลืน นั่นเป็นสาเหตุสำคัญที่ทำให้สัตว์เหล่านี้สามารถจะหลีกพ้นอันตรายต่างๆ และสืบเผ่าพันธุ์มาถึงปัจจุบันนี้ได้ เพียงแต่มนุษย์สามารถใช้กระบวนการคิดทางวิทยาศาสตร์เพิ่มเติมจากสัญชาตญาณได้ จึงน่าจะมีความสมบูรณ์กว่า |
