การรับประทานยาเป็นเรื่องปกติในชีวิตของเราทุกคนเมื่อเจ็บไข้ไม่สบาย บางครั้งแพทย์หรือเภสัชกรจะกำชับว่าต้องรับประทานยาปฏิชีวนะที่ให้มาจนหมด เพราะเหตุใดเราจึงต้องรับประทานยาปฏิชีวนะให้หมดตามที่แพทย์สั่ง

รศ.ดร.โอภา วัชระคุปต์ อาจารย์ประจำคณะเภสัชศาสตร์ มหาวิทยาลัยมหิดล อธิบายว่าการรับประทานยาปฏิชีวนะตามที่แพทย์ หรือเภสัชกรแนะนำว่าต้องรับประทานให้หมดซองหรือรับประทานให้ครบตามกำหนดนั้น มีความสำคัญคือทำให้ร่างกายไม่เกิดอาการดื้อยา เพราะการดื้อยาจะเป็นโทษกับตัวเราเองและทำให้ผู้ป่วยอาจจะไม่หายจากอาการป่วยหรืออาจจะทำให้เชื้อแบคทีเรียที่เกิดการดื้อยาแพร่กระจายไปสู่คนอื่นๆด้วย สาเหตุที่ทำให้ร่างกายเกิดการดื้อยาก็คือ ในช่วงที่รับประทานยาปฏิชีวนะ ยาปฏิชีวนะจะเข้าไปทำลายหรือหยุดการเติบโตของเชื้อแบคทีเรียในกระแสเลือด เช่นสมมุติว่าในร่างกายของเราขณะนั้นมีเชื้อแบคทีเรียอยู่ประมาณ 10,000 ตัว ยาปฏิชีวนะจะเข้าไปทำลายเชื้อแบคทีเรียให้ลดลงจนเหลือ 1,000 ตัว

เพราะฉะนั้นในระหว่างที่ยาปฏิชีวนะเข้าทำลายเชื้อแบคทีเรียนั้นจะมีการต่อต้านจากเชื้อแบคทีเรีย เช่น พยายามกำจัดตัวยาออกไป โดยสร้างกลไกไม่ให้ยาซึมผ่านเข้าไปหรือสร้างเอนไซม์ขึ้นมาเพื่อทำลายฤทธิ์ของยานั้น ถ้าผู้ป่วยรับประทานยาจนครบตามที่แพทย์สั่ง จะทำให้เชื้อแบคทีเรียลดจำนวนลงจนตายหมดทุกตัว ก็จะทำให้ไม่มีเชื้อแบคทีเรียที่เคยรับรู้ว่ายาชนิดนี้เคยทำลายมันได้ แต่ถ้าเราหยุดรับประทานยา หรือรับประทานยาไปแค่ 3วัน จะทำให้เชื้อแบคทีเรียที่เหลืออยู่จำนวน 1,000 ตัว เริ่มรับรู้ว่ามียาที่สามารถทำลายมันได้ เชื้อแบคทีเรียก็จะเริ่มสร้างกลไกเพื่อป้องกันตัวเอง นี่ก็คือเหตุผลว่าทำไมเราถึงต้องรับประทานยาปฏิชีวนะให้หมดตามที่แพทย์สั่ง
